Let’s play “Name That Scripture Reference.” I give you a verse of the Bible, and you give me where it is found. I removed the name that is listed in the verse so as not to give it away. Other than that it will be straight from the Bible.
The only rule??? Do not google the text!

ReplyDeleteThe verse is Micah 6: 8 and the missing word is actually two words "O Man". Brother Cris, you need to give us the reference book and the Edition as they read differently. I know that you use the ESV version but did you know that their advertisement states they have "more than 100 highly creative?? Bible editions. I love these Bible games but it's much more difficult when the versions read differently!

ReplyDeleteI did not see this comment before I made my previous comment on the other post. I will respond to this one, and it will be the last time I comment on this issue of translations...
First of all, the reference is Deuteronomy 10:12, not Micah 6:8. That is a good guess though! They both mention what the LORD requires of us.
Second, the differences you mentioned in your other comment about the KJV "He hath shewed thee" and the ESV "He has told you" are incorrect. You made the statement that the ESV changed the meaning of the verse with its translation. That is not the case.
I looked up the Hebrew word that is translated "show" in KJV and "tell" in ESV. I assume you would accept Strong's concordance as a satisfactory source. Here is what Strong's says about this word...
'nagad' /naw·gad/] v. A primitive root; TWOT 1289; GK 5583; 370 occurrences; AV translates as...
“tell” 222 times,
“declare” 63 times,
“shew” 59 times,
“utter” five times,
“shew forth” three times,
“expound” twice,
“messenger” twice,
“report” twice,
and translated miscellaneously 13 times.

So, 222 times the KJV translates this word as "tell" and only 59 times as "shew". The point is that the word can mean both. To make a big deal over these differences in translation is not helpful.
Third, I don't know anything about the marketing of the ESV Bible. But on their homepage (http://www.gnpcb.org/esv/), they describe the ESV as "A new, essentially literal translation that combines word-for-word precision and accuracy with literary excellence, beauty and readability." If you are highlighting "creative" to imply they are creative in their translation, you are mistaken.

Brother Cris, I will make this as short and final as possible. The quote that contained their word 'creative' is on their (the ESV) web page, esily found. Get on WWW.ESV.org and then click on 'More about ESV', then look down at the very bottom of that page and you will see the caption 'Discover more than 100 Highly Creative ESV Bible Editions.' They do also advertise their books with the verbage you used in your reply, but that should be taken with a grain of salt as they are actually in the book selling business. Most all of the advertisment for the modern translations say similar things. All that I have said is correct and I have no intention to mislead anyone. To the contrary I wish everyone could be on the same page. My purpose from the start was to participate in what could be a very good thing if folks whould just take the time to read, study, and share. But I felt someone ought to remind you that it is sometimes very hard to follow, answer quizes, or even read the text, if we don't know where you're getting it from. So I will just try to keep my comments very short and do my own studying. I can see already that we have read some of the same things and have different views which probably do not need to be aired out on a public forum. Hope your wife is progressing well from the surgery.
